Weligama - My Favourite Coastal Retreat
Weligama, a picturesque coastal town on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, has always been one of my favourite hotspots. Whenever I get a chance, I find myself drawn back to this beautiful place. The perfect time to visit is from November to April when the dry, sunny weather makes it ideal for beach activities and, of course, surfing—something Weligama is famous for. The tropical climate ensures warm temperatures year-round, but from May to October, the monsoon brings heavy rains, making it a bit less suitable for outdoor fun.
During the dry season, the town truly comes alive. I love spending time on the sandy shores, watching the gentle waves roll in. Surfing here is a thrill for both beginners and seasoned surfers alike. And let’s not forget the incredible local seafood! The relaxed vibe of Weligama, combined with its adventurous spirit, makes it the perfect destination for both relaxation and exploration along Sri Lanka’s stunning southern coastline.
Excursions I Always Recommend While in Weligama
Weligama Bay
A short drive from Mirissa, Weligama Bay is one of the best spots for surfing in the region. The crescent-shaped bay, with its gentle waves, has become a go-to for surfers from around the world. Even if you’re not keen on surfing yourself, watching the local surfers effortlessly ride the waves is an experience in itself. The surf culture here is vibrant, and it's a great place for anyone to give surfing a try—whether you're a beginner or experienced.
Weligama Beach
Whenever I’m in Weligama, I make it a point to spend time at Weligama Beach. The crescent-shaped bay, with its gently sloping sands, offers the perfect backdrop for swimming, sunbathing, and just soaking in the relaxed seaside atmosphere. The beach's surf culture is alive and well, attracting both locals and international visitors alike. You can rent a board or take lessons and get a taste of the surfing life, which is a must-do here.
Taprobane Island
A little off the coast of Weligama is Taprobane Island, a private island accessible only by boat. Whenever I need a peaceful escape, this place feels like a sanctuary. The historic villa and tropical gardens transport you to a different world. From here, the views of the surrounding coastline are absolutely breath-taking.
Polhena Beach
For a more tranquil experience, I recommend Polhena Beach, located near Matara. The calm, sheltered waters are perfect for swimming, and it’s a great spot if you're looking for a quieter day by the sea. Polhena is a hidden gem, offering a serene atmosphere without the crowds, perfect for unwinding.
Mirissa Fishing Harbour
Just a short drive from Weligama, the Mirissa Fishing Harbour is always buzzing with life. I love visiting the docks to watch the local fishermen go about their daily routines. You can even buy fresh seafood directly from the boats. It’s a wonderful place to experience Sri Lanka’s maritime traditions up close.
Matara Fort
Whenever I’m in the area, I like to stop by Matara Fort, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The fort is a beautiful blend of history and everyday life in the town of Matara. Walking through the fort's well-preserved ramparts and colonial-era streets feels like stepping back in time.
Koggala Cinnamon Estate
For a deep dive into Sri Lanka’s spice heritage, I always suggest a visit to the Koggala Cinnamon Estate. Learning about cinnamon cultivation and participating in hands-on experiences is fascinating. It's a beautiful way to connect with the agricultural traditions of the region.
